It might sound a little odd but there is such a thing as a bad shower experience, even if you have never experienced this odd phenomenon yourself. Showers can at times give the user a poor experience, and it is more than possible you had one yourself but you have gotten so used to it that you think it is normal. To understand what the most common causes of a poor shower experience, read on and see if anything seems familiar. The causes covered are:
- Leaks
- Poor quality shower head
- Low water pressure
- Bad drainage
- Poor ventilation
Let us take a look at them, one at a time
Shower leaks
So you have this wonderful, possibly expensive, new shower and you find yourself not able to enjoy it the way that you should be able to. All the advantages that a new and fancy shower can bring can all but disappear if your new (or even existing) installation is or starts leaking.
There are several reasons why a shower could be leaking. For one, it could be something as simple as an issue with the pipes. Alternatively, too much water pressure for the fitted shower head could be the culprit, or the shower enclosure is not sealed correctly and this is allowing water to escape.
Leaking water can cause all manner of damage, particularly to walls and floors. Tiles can be affected too if the water begins to damage adhesion. Some smaller issues can probably be tackled personally, such as sealing enclosures, but most require the hiring of a professional.
Poor quality shower head
A showering experience can not be even close to being a pleasant one if the shower head that you are using is old, corroded, clogged or leaking. What could be a worse showering experience than that? If you are determined to improve your shower time, then you could do worse than to invest in a new shower head.
Added effects, such as mist, rainfall etc. can make an amazing improvement making a new shower head a worthwhile investment.
Too low water pressure
If your water pressure is too far on the low side then even the most stylish, well-equipped shower units are going to lose some of not most of their appeal. If the shower that you have is not able to throw water at you with sufficient force and instead is akin to a light rain drizzle, then it was a waste of money because you are not getting the most from it.
A new pump will go a long way in making sure that the water pressure rises sufficiently, improving the flow of water through the shower unit and making your showering experience much better.
Bad drainage
If the drainage system attached to the showering unit is not draining as it should, it can cause serious issues like water not being able to drain away. If this happens then you are going to find yourself in a pool of water pretty quickly. If you end up with water, even a small amount, across a shower enclosure floor that isn’t draining then you are looking at an accident just waiting to happen.
Water that doesn't drain away properly for an extended period of time can cause other issues. Mould loves these kinds of environments, and some species of bacteria can thrive here too.
Getting rid of issues like poor drainage, or heading it off and preventing it from happening in the first place, is a matter of maintenance. Cleaning the drainage and making sure plug holes remain hair-free is a good way to start. If there is already a blockage and it is a little trickier than simply cleaning, then purchasing a drainage system replacement may be the only next step forward.
Poor ventilation
As well as poor drainage, poor ventilation can also cause the growth of mould. Mould is fairly simple to treat and remove but it is very unsightly and with poor ventilation, it will just keep on coming back. If there is no ventilation system in your bathroom, perhaps you just have a window, then at the very least, you should be considering buying an extractor fan.
Extractor fans should be turned on before you start showering, or any other time the bathroom is expected to get steamy, and turned off after the steam has dissipated. Many new systems have timers and/or automatic iris’ to make things a little easier in this regard.
To conclude
By keeping all of the above in mind, there is no reason why your showering experience cannot be a positive and relaxing one. Simple steps for a great shower – what could be easier?
