Wall hung toilet buying guide – everything you need to know about a wall hung toilet

When thinking of wall hung toilets, the minds of many people may well wander to the urinals that can be found in hotels, pubs, restaurants… that is not what we mean here though. When we say 'wall hung toilet, what we mean is a space-saving, functional and, dare we say it, a good look bathroom facility.

There are much more design options than ever before when it comes to the humble toilet, which means that the more traditional visible cistern system doesn’t have to be the only option for your bathroom.

Our streamlined wall hung toilets have a reduced depth, making them ideal for smaller bathrooms or instances where you just want to reduce the footprint of bathroom items while having look great at the same time.

Are wall hung toilets any good?

Like most things, personal preference is a major in whether or not wall hung toilets are any good or not. Many people prefer them, and they are becoming increasingly popular, for several reasons including:

  • Smaller profile
  • Easier to clean
  • They look better than traditional toilets

One of the more obvious advantages on that list is that the toilet is designed to sit several inches off the floor. Why is that a good thing? It's not to hide under when there are chores to be taken care of. They are this way for two reasons. Firstly, it just looks better and second, it makes it easier to clean under and around the unit.

Unlike a more traditional setup, there are no little nooks and crannies for dust and dirt to gather. There is no sealant that will just discolour over time, and nearly no hard-to-reach spots whatsoever. The majority of wall hung toilets, like the Vitra S50, have smooth and sleek sides that are very easily wiped clean. Some designs, such as the one linked, have a rimless design which makes them much easier to clean and 95% more bacteria resistant.

As you can see, the wall-hung range here at Bath Shack is better than traditional options if only for enhanced cleanliness.

Personal taste has been mentioned before, and it is a very subjective thing, but many people are usually intrigued if not outright ‘wowed’ by a toilet that seemingly floats in the air. They have become very popular, and with soft close lids like the one featured by the Marbella model, they are getting harder to say no to when designing or redesigning a bathroom.

Are wall hung toilets becoming more popular

While it is certainly true that the wall hung toilets have grown in popularity, especially in new build bathrooms and homes, they are still not all that common. Traditional seats and lids, like those offered with the Nuie Melbourne, may well tempt more people across the lessening divide between the two styles.

It isn't just the design style of course that makes wall hung toilets such a popular option for new builds and renovations. Several factors gleefully come together, as with many other home developments, to make these toilets such an attractive option.

They are rather easy to maintain too, despite there being no visible cistern. Having the plumbing tucked neatly away into the wall, we think, just makes wall hung toilets even more of a sensible option. It just looks so much neater, tidier and more pleasing on the eye.

Having a ‘maintenance’ or access panel in play means there is no struggling to repair or maintain the plumbing the unlikely happen and there is an issue. The panels are relatively easy to install, you just have to be sure to plan for one when you start installing the wall hung toilet.

Wall hung toilet limitations

No, because of the way wall hung toilets are, well, hung there are weight limitations, as you would probably expect. A wall hung toilet that is correctly installed should comfortably hold 200kg (a little over 31 stone). While it is not recommended that anyone jump or just drop down onto a wall hung toilet, it is highly unlikely that it is going to come away from the wall.

In fact, the vast majority of manufacturers test their wall hung toilets to twice the recommended weight limit (a staggering 60 stone) and some test for even more than that. What this means is that this type of toilet is extremely safe, so there is nothing to worry about. An experienced plumber will know how to correctly install one of these, if you are not 100% certain yourself. All in all, the only thing limiting you is trying to decide which style you want.
