The Health Benefits of taking a Bath

Due to a rise in busy lifestyles, many of us take showers on a daily basis and have forgotten the many benefits of taking a regular bath. Baths are not only a great way of relaxing at the end of a long day, they come with many health benefits. In today’s article, we will be discussing these benefits as well as providing you with some useful bath preparation tips.

Stress relief

Baths help to improve our overall mood and relieve stress. A bath can help to ease any pain in muscles, provide a relaxing atmosphere and most notably helps people to escape the stressors of daily life. We aren’t just saying this because we love everything related to bathrooms, it is a statement that has been researched and proven. A study conducted by the University of Wolverhampton found that when people took regular baths their mood had significantly improved and they were more optimistic about the future.

Better sleep

It is well-known that the recommended amount of sleep everyone should be getting each night is around 8 hours. However, this is something that very few of us seem to achieve, consistently at least.

Our bodies follow a cycle called the circadian rhythm. This controls our waking, sleeping, and eating cycles. The rhythm is attuned to our body temperature. When we have a warm bath and start to cool down once we get out, our circadian rhythm is signalled to make us feel sleepy. The drop in our temperature causes our heart rate, breathing rate, and digestion. Having a warm bath close to the time you are sleeping is the perfect way to unwind and get our bodies ready for optimal sleep. Aim to shower or bathe approximately an hour to an hour and a half before you intend to sleep.

During the summer, it may be difficult to get a natural temperature body drop. For this reason, having a bath is not only a good way to freshen ourselves up and to set ourselves up for a decline in body temperatures that will help you to drift off to sleep.

Help to prevent and fight the flu

When you’re battling a cold or flu, congestion is caused by inflammation of your nasal passages. As you bathe, this congestion is relieved. Breathing in the steamy air while you’re in the bath brings soothing relief which can put you comfortably on the road to recovery and improve your well-being overall.

Muscle recovery

It isn’t just warm baths that are beneficial. Ice cold baths are used by many athletes following their workouts. Once a body is submerged in cold water, it can help to reduce inflammation and recovery time. Additionally, the cold temperature works similarly to an ice pack and will help to speed up your recovery time for injuries. The cold temperature reduces the circulation flow of the injury, which is what helps to reduce the inflammation and swelling of an injury. As your body warms up after the ice bath, the blood flow returns to normal circulation.

How to make the perfect bath

To gain all of these benefits you will need to personalise your bath to suit your preferences.

Clean your bath tub before you start to run your water. In doing this, you will be removing any dirt and hair that could still be on the tub surface from its last use.

Once you start the tap, you don’t want to get yourself flustered trying to find all of your products. Running the perfect bath requires care and attention. Have everything you need at the ready before you start running the water.

Finally, you don’t want to get in your bath and find it is either too hot or too cold. Ensure the bath water is warm enough that it won’t go cold anytime soon. Feeling the need to turn the hot tap back once you’re in the bath isn’t a good feeling, nor is sweating due to the bath being too hot. Find your happy medium by testing your water with your elbow (as your elbow is more sensitive to heat change than your hands) before you step in.
