Shave Like You’ve Never Shaved Before

Let’s face it; shaving isn’t for everyone. While many men find that a smooth shaved face is the ticket to Coolsville, others prefer the rugged lumberjack look, and that’s ok. It’s fine.

But for those of you who do like to keep things tidy with a close shave, we’ve put together a handy list of shaving and skincare tips to make sure your skin remains as happy as a bull in a bull shop…or something.

Before Getting Started

Choose your weapon* (Disclaimer: no shaving equipment should EVER be used as a weapon); whether you choose to shave with a manual or electric razor really just comes down to personal preference. However, if you are prone to spots and blemishes we recommend avoiding the manual razor on your face; it can open pustules and lead to further infection and spreading of spots.

Combating Skin Irritations

Irritated skin can be a common occurrence for those who shave regularly, especially if shaving with a manual razor. Here’s a few handy tips we’ve come across over the years that are sure to take the edge off, so to speak.

  • You can sooth and relieve irritated skin with a witch hazel salve (available at health-food stores). The effects of this can be intensified by mixing a few drops of tea tree oil.

  • Combat irritation and soothe your skin after shaving with creams and salves containing marigold, chamomile or aloe vera (available at health-food stores).

  • Make a balanced aftershave lotion by combining thoroughly 75g of pH-neutral moisturiser (from a pharmacy) and 1 teaspoon each of jojoba, apricot kernel and almond oil, and one tablespoon of aloe vera gel, plus 2 drops each of camomile, mint and geranium oil. Store the aftershave in a jar in a cool place.

Treating Small Cuts

It can be all too easy to end up with a few small nicks and cuts after shaving; we like to call them “stingers”.

Here’s a few old tricks that can help stop the bleeding quickly:

  • Dab small cuts with cotton wool ball moistened with surgical spirit.

  • Use a moist styptic pencil, which is designed to promote coagulation.

  • Grind dried yarrow flowers to powder in a mortar using a pestle. Apply to the cut and press lightly with a damp cloth.

Ingrowing Hairs

Ingrowing hairs can come as a result of shaving with a manual razor, and can be a real annoyance. Here’s a trick to remove them with a minimum of fuss!

  • Apply a hot compress (for example, a damp cloth with 2-3 drops of tea tree oil on it) then pull out the hair with clean tweezers and disinfect the skin with a drop of tea tree oil.  To prevent ingrown hairs, use only clean, sharp blades and always shave in the direction of the hair growth.
