Creating a sleek, modern bathroom is a great way to add a fresh dash of life into your home, but if there’s one thing that an quickly sap the feeling of style from the bedroom, it’s a dirty floor!

Luckily the Bathshack team are back again with another blog post packed to the brim with helpful household tips and tricks, and this week we’ll be looking at simple ways to keep your bathroom floor spotless!

Material

How you care for your floor depends greatly on what material it is made from. Some, like shiny sealed floors take less effort to clean than unsealed ones, while delicate materials such as wood or laminate need special attention.

To get the best results, we’ll break down our floor cleaning guide into tips for various types of floors.

Tile Floors

–    Sweep or vacuum the floor before mopping it. Mop in a wavy line’ without lifting the mop from the floor, starting at one end and moving towards the door. If the floors very dirty you ya need to change the cleaning water.

–    Choose a sponge mop for cleaning tile floors as they do a much better job of cleaning seams and small irregularities in the tiles.

–    Clean stone tiled floors by adding a small ammonia to the water. This combination can also make dull tiles shine like new!

–    Seal porous terracotta and unglazed natural stone tiles with linseed oil as soon as they have been laid (before grouting), and avoid mopping for two weeks.

–    Remove liquid stains (such as tea, coffee, cola, red wine, fruit juices and ink) from porous tiles by dabbing them with regular stain remover.

Wood Floors

–    Ensure as little moisture as possible is left behind by a wet mop as this will cause wood floors to swell and warp. Also, beware of using extremely hot water as it may cause wood to crack and split.

–    Tackle serious streaks and stains on sealed wood floors by adding a shot of ammonia to the water.

–    Sweep up sand and small stones immediately, as their abrasiveness could cause damage.

–    Remove scratches on wood flooring with matching shoe polish.

–    Mop sealed wood floors with black tea to add a matt sheen and an attractive colour!

Other Materials

–    Sweep and damp-mop laminated floors. Too much moisture will make the material swell.

–    Damp-mop then rub dry sealed cork flooring. Apply wax sparingly twice a year and occasionally polish until shiny.

–    You can best protect a stone floor by applying cement sealer and wax.

–    Wash polished limestone flooring with a low -pH all-purpose cleaner or it will become dull. Use a cleaner with a few detergents as possible (10 – 20 per cent).
