How to keep your bathroom warm in winter

If your bathroom is feeling chilly this winter, there are various things you can do to make it feel warmer – both physically and in terms of creating a warmer looking space which appears more inviting. Whether you have a large bathroom or a smaller interior, transforming it into somewhere warm and welcoming can be done with a few simple adjustments.

To find out what we recommend, read to the end of the blog for some top tips and inspirational products …

Heat-retaining porcelain matt tiles

No one enjoys stepping out onto an ice-cold floor in the dead of winter, so one way to make your bathroom cosier is to make this feel warmer. There are various ways you can do this – from adding rugs and bathroom mats, to the type of tiling you choose for the room.

If you don’t want rugs or would simply like to choose a more efficient tile, then opting for porcelain tiling is a good idea, as this hard-wearing material conducts and retains heat efficiently. Ideal for bathrooms due to its non-porous qualities, porcelain also holds heat better once warm, so is great for using with underfloor heating, while it will also keep in heat generated from any radiators within the room.

Choosing a porcelain tile with a matt finish will further enhance the feeling of warmth, as the denser finish of matt tiling means that it automatically feels warmer underfoot.

For example, the Loire Maple Chevron Rectified Matt Porcelain Tile has a modern matt finish and is made from high-quality porcelain, so is a great choice if you want a warmer floor tile. It also has a brown wood-effect design which will further contribute to the cosiness of the room. Featuring authentic graining detail and with a distinctive chevron pattern, these large rectangular tiles also have a textured appearance and will complement a range of décor, so are very versatile.

The Brushed Brass Frame Mirror With Colour-change will add a warm glow to your bathroom.

LED mirrors with ambient lighting

The colour scheme of your bathroom is another thing to think about when it comes to cultivating a warmer space. Again, the tiles you choose can help with this, as you can opt for those with richer warming tones. Another idea is to get an LED bathroom mirror with warm lighting, such as the Brushed Brass Frame Mirror with Colour-change.

Not only does this stylish mirror have the option of two lighting styles – warm and cool-white – it also has a brushed brass finish, so it delivers on all fronts in terms of using colour to create the illusion of warmth. You can therefore benefit from the elegant style of the mirror along with high-quality lighting and a luxurious finish which will enhance your bathroom in more ways than one.

Installing a large showerhead like the Eliseo Ricci Cube Plus Thermostatic Rain Shower with Diverter will add warmth.

Choose large showerheads for enveloping warmth

While you will, of course, usually shower under warm water, if you have a smaller showerhead then you can sometimes still feel the chill from the surrounding space, so investing in a larger size will ensure all-encompassing heat.

The Eliseo Ricci Cube Plus Thermostatic Rain Shower with Diverter has a large square-shaped showerhead in a polished chrome finish which is perfect for delivering an immersive, luxury showering experience. The rainfall-effect waterflow is designed to recreate the sensation of standing under a rainfall, so you can enjoy the luxurious immersive experience of this combined with the cocooning warmth of the water.

The chrome finish of this shower is also easily integrated into existing bathroom décor, with its classic chrome look, while the squared style gives it a contemporary edge.

Add underfloor heating

In addition to choosing tiles with good heat retention properties – like porcelain tiling, as mentioned above – installing underfloor heating beneath these is another inspired way to ensure a cosy bathroom. With both electric and wet underfloor heating kits available, you can choose whichever suits your bathroom best and then enjoy warm floors underfoot whenever you want.

Although underfloor heating can cost more initially to install, once fitted, it provides efficient heating, so is more likely to save energy and money in the long run. Underfloor heating is also compatible with most tiling and is ideal for using underneath porcelain tiles. If you have a smaller bathroom, it also means that you can maximise the use of your space as you won’t need to fit bulky radiators.

Wet underfloor heating kits work off your home plumbing system.

Electric underfloor heating kits are operated by electricity so don't rely on your home plumbing system.

Heated towel rails and radiators

Our final suggestion for keeping your bathroom warm this winter is to install efficient radiators and/or heated towel rails. With a wide range of styles on offer, you can choose from classic and contemporary designs, as well as various finishes, including matt black, white, polished chrome and brushed brass.

Radiators are the most effective way of heating your bathroom, as heated towel rails are designed to warm towels and, while they also heat the immediate surrounding space, they aren’t going to heat a large bathroom thoroughly.

The Peretti Aluminium Radiator in Matt Black combines traditional and modern design.

If you have a smaller bathroom, however, then heated towel rails can also help to warm the space while keeping towels dry. For instance, the Lazzarini Silea Straight Heated Towel Rail in Brushed Brass has an elegant aesthetic and will add warmth via that rich brass tone as well as the heating element.

Perfect for pairing with a range of décor, this practical towel rail can be plumbed as dual-fuel or electric only, so also offers flexibility when it comes to fitting. Again, it has a vertical style which adds a contemporary aesthetic which will save space in your bathroom.
