How to fit shower panels: Expert tips and tricks

When it comes to completing your shower, laying tiles is one way to add style and functionality but another great option is to use shower panels, which can also be more cost-effective. Available in a variety of designs and colours, shower panels don’t require grouting so are also very easy to install and keep clean, making them ideal if you want something which requires minimal upkeep.

If you enjoy a spot of DIY then you could try fitting shower panels by yourself, although we always advise hiring a professional, especially if you aren’t confident with such jobs. If you’d like to find out how to fit shower panels, however, read to the end of the blog for an overview.

Step-by-step guide to installing shower panels

Before fitting your shower panels it’s assumed that you’ll already have chosen panelling suitable for your bathroom in terms of style, robustness and waterproofing capabilities. Once you have your panels you can then go about fitting them in your shower.

Measure the space

The first thing you need to do before fitting your panels is to measure the space where they’ll go, so that you have accurate information for cutting them to size. This will also help to prevent extra cutting, as it’s preferable to only have to do this once and to get an exact fit for the shower without any gaps.

Prep the wall surfaces

Make sure the wall surface/s that the panels will be fitted to are clean, dry and smooth before installation, removing any existing tiles or fixtures and filling in any holes or cracks. This will ensure a better fit and ensure that the wall panels appear even after installation. Also make sure you consider any obstacles in the way which will affect how the panels are cut and fitted, such as windows and pipes.

Cut the shower panels

Using your wall measurements as guidance, mark out the shower panels with masking tape so you can cut along this with a fine-toothed saw or a utility knife to get the right size for your shower. The masking tape will also help to protect the edges of the panels during the cutting process.

Sand the panels

After cutting the panels to size, sand down the edges along with the backs of the panels, to give them a rougher texture which will provide a better surface for the adhesive. You can also add corner trims to the panels for a neater finish, as preferred, attaching these to the wall using adhesive or screws.

Apply adhesive

The next step is to apply a suitable adhesive to the back of the panels, being sure to refer to the manufacturer's instructions for guidance. Spread the adhesive evenly using a notched trowel to ensure good coverage and a more reliable result.

Fit the shower panels

Once the adhesive has been applied you can then secure the panels to the wall, taking care to position them correctly. A good rule of thumb is to begin at the bottom corner of the wall and work your way up, using spacers to maintain even gaps between the panels and ensure a uniform appearance.

NB: As many wall panels have a tongue and groove style, always ensure that these have locked into place.

Secure the panels

Use screws or nails to secure the panels in place, especially around the edges and corners, making sure to drive the fasteners into studs or solid backing for maximum stability.

Seal the joints

Once the panels are installed, seal the joints and seams with a waterproof silicone sealant to ensure a watertight finish.
