How to Clean your showerhead
When it comes to keeping your bathroom pristine, cleaning the shower is something many people like to put off. However, regular cleaning will make things easier every time and there are various hacks you can use to make these tasks more appealing.
In this blog we’ll subsequently look at how to go about descaling your showerhead and keeping it clean, so you can enjoy a shower which not only looks good but is also more hygienic and efficient.
Regularly cleaning your showerhead will prevent a build-up of mineral deposits.
Step-by-step guide to cleaning your showerhead
It's important to keep your showerhead clean for various reasons - aesthetics is, of course, one of these, along with maintaining good waterflow and preventing the build-up of mineral deposits and bacteria.
What you'll need:
- White vinegar or baking soda
- Water
- Basin/container
- Old toothbrush or a soft cleaning brush
- Plastic bag(depending on your showerhead type)
- Elastic band(depending on your showerhead type)
Step one: Unscrew the showerhead.
Step one: Remove the showerhead (as applicable)
If you have a showerhead which is detachable, then first unscrew it from the shower arm before cleaning. If it's fixed in place, however, then you can fill a plastic bag with a white vinegar/baking soda and water mixture and secure this to the showerhead with a rubber band to keep it in place.
Step two: Prepare the cleaning mixture
Fill a basin or container with equal parts white vinegar and water (e.g. half a cup of vinegar mixed with two cups of water). You can also use baking soda mixed with water, if preferred.
Step two: Prepare your cleaning solution
Step three: Soak the showerhead in your solution (or at this stage tie the plastic bag around your attached showerhead).
Step three: Soak the showerhead
Once you’ve made your mixture, place the detached showerhead into the basin/container, leaving it to soak for about 30 minutes. Ensure that all of the shower nozzles are submerged in the solution.
If your showerhead isn’t detachable then fill a plastic bag with the mixture and hang this from the showerhead (making sure the showerhead is again submerged in the solution), fixing it in place with an elastic band or similar.
If you feel that your showerhead is very clogged, then you can leave it to steep for a longer period of time. However, prolonged submersion in vinegar could cause corrosion.
Step four: Scrub and rinse the showerhead
Once the showerhead has had time to soak in the solution you can use an old toothbrush or soft brush to scrub away any remaining build-up or debris, paying extra attention to the nozzles and crevices, before rinsing it clean.
NB If you removeds the showerhead then you can now screw it back onto the shower arm.
Step five: Test the waterflow
Once the showerhead is clean, it’s a good idea to check the waterflow to make sure it’s running smoothly. If you notice any issues, such as reduced flow, you may need to repeat the cleaning process or check for other issues, such as clogs in the pipes.
If everything is working ok, however, then the job is done!
