How to Clean a Freestanding Bath

WHAT IS A FREESTANDING BATH?

Freestanding baths are typically found in the center of a bathroom and do not need to be installed up against a wall. Freestanding bath tubs showcase luxury and often become the centerpiece of any bathroom that they are installed in. Additionally, they are an investment for your property and potentially boosts its salability.

HOW TO CHOOSE A FREESTANDING BATH

Freestanding baths are now found in a wide range of sizes offering a much broader choice at affordable prices. Measure up carefully to ensure the tub will fit in your bathroom with enough breathing room for you to move around easily. A common misconception is that freestanding baths cannot be fitted in smaller bathrooms. If your bathroom is small, consider a short roll-top or slipper bath, or a back to wall design. Back to wall freestanding baths can also be teamed with a wall-mounted tap. As the name states, they are plumbed into the wall, saving even more space.

CLEANING

Once you become an owner of a freestanding bath, you will definitely be wanting to keep it looking top condition. Fortunately, cleaning and maintaining a freestanding bath isn’t a tedious task but there are a few things you will need to keep in mind. Use this article as a guide on how to clean your bath with ease and to make sure that you don’t inadvertently damage the bathtub’s surface.

DOES CLEANING A FREESTANDING BATH DEPEND ON ITS MATERIAL?

Most freestanding baths are made from stone, cast iron and acrylic. Each type of material will need its own TLC.

ARCYLIC BATHS

Some chemicals and cleaners may deteriorate acrylic surfaces. Be sure to read the small print on cleaning labels so you can confidently clean without worrying about using an unsuitable product.

Bleach and water – Mix one-part bleach and two parts hot water into a bucket to create a disinfectant. Use a sponge to wipe over the bath and rinse away any remaining solution.

Liquid dish soap – Yes, you read that correctly. Liquid dish soap is a great cleaner and can be used in many areas as well as your kitchen. This will prevent dirt and grime from building up. Just wet a soft cloth or sponge with antibacterial dish soap and use it to scrub the entire tub. Rinse the tub to completely remove the dirt and soap.

Remember to use a soft cloth or sponge to avoid scratching the acrylic surface. Don’t use abrasive scrubbing pads that can tarnish the acrylic.

CAST IRON BATHS

Using an acidic cleaner is not advised for cleaning cast iron tubs with as it will simply wear away at the tub. Harmful chemicals can also lead to discoloration. Instead, opt for mild cleaners that will lift any grim without causing damage. Cream cleaners and liquid soap are recommended for their gentle application. Baking soda can also be used. To use baking soda mix it with warm water, apply the solution to your tub, allow to sit for 30 minutes and wipe away any grime with a towel.

STONE BATHS

Harsh cleaners often contain acids and alkalis (like vinegar or bleach) that can react with stone. If you have made the mistake of using bleach to clean  a stone surface you may have noticed that it will have lost its shine. Therefore, only use mild cleaners that are deemed safe for stone. Always do a spot tastes to check if a product is suitable.

ARE FREESTANDING BATHS HARD TO CLEAN AROUND/UNDER?

A lot of people worry that if they install a freestanding bath, they will be spending copious amounts of time cleaning. This isn’t the case for those installed in the center of a bathroom. In fact, these baths can be easier to clean. When a freestanding bath is placed against a wall, a bit more attention is required. You may have to use a vacuum extension to capture dust from beneath the bath.

MAINTAINING A BATH

A great way to keep on top of your cleaning is to rinse your bath down after every use. This is something that can be done very quickly and it will help to wash away any bath products you may have used during your bath. Soaps, bath bombs, and those much-needed bubbles will all leave behind residue. It is recommended that you clean your bath tub once per week. Wipe it down with your chosen products and prevent your tub from losing its shine.
