How to change a toilet seat in five easy steps

If you’re wanting to upgrade your toilet seat and swap out your existing one for a more stylish design or simply need to replace it due to wear and tear, then this is something you can easily do yourself.

In this blog we’ll take you through five simple steps on how to change a toilet seat, so read to the end to get the lowdown.

Step-by-step guide

The type of toilet seat you already have will dictate how you remove it, but most toilet seats are similar in style, so our guide will cover all the main points.

Before you start, you’ll need the following tools:

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers/adjustable wrench
  • Rubber gloves
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Step one

Measure your toilet to ensure that you know what size of seat you need to replace.

NB Make sure the new toilet seat comes supplied with all the fixings you need to secure it in place, otherwise you’ll need to get these separately.

    Step two

Remove the existing toilet seat fixings from your toilet. Depending on how securely these are attached, you may need to use your pliers to help loosen and remove them. Most seats are attached with screws that are covered by caps for aesthetic purposes. Just lift off the plastic caps and then unscrew the fixings.

    Step three

Remove the toilet seat. It’s best to use gloves to do this, to prevent the spread of any germs – both onto yourself and/or the new toilet seat. You can clean around the toilet now using a cloth and warm soapy water, before attaching the new seat.

    Step four

Attach the fixings for the new toilet seat onto the toilet, but only loosely, as you’ll need to adjust the seat once it’s put into position. Once you’re certain that the fixings are in the correct places – measuring them in relation to the new seat – then you can tighten them.

To get the required length, measure the distance between the fixing holes and the distance to the front of the toilet bowl. Then, measure across the toilet pan at its widest point for the width.

For the height, measure the distance between the fixing holes and the wall or cistern.

NB Always check any manufacturer’s instructions if you’re unsure of anything.

    Step five

Fit the new toilet seat by placing it over the pegs you just attached to the bowl and then lock into place as necessary by pressing down gently. You can do a final check to make sure the toilet seat is as you want it and then, you’re good to go!
