It’s no surprise that utility bills become considerably more expensive during the chilly winter months. While more obvious utilities such as central heating, gas and electric fires and lighting are used much more frequently, there are certain fixtures and appliances around the house that are used much more often during winter that may not come immediately to mind.
For example, cold, damp conditions make it more difficult to dry clothes on a washing line, especially if there are multiple loads of washing to get through. This can easily lead to the extended use of a dryer, which can be heavy on electric bills. Also, colder weather can give us the urge to stay in the shower just that little bit longer each time; stepping out onto that cold floor isn’t too appealing to anyone!
Well luckily, we’ve sourced a few handy little items that can help you cut down on overuse of utilities and fittings all around the home!
Shower Timer
As mentioned above, overusing the shower can easily contribute to much higher water, gas and electricity costs. This handy little device will help you keep your shower times under check, and stop time running away with you! Simply start the timer before stepping into your shower, and aim to finish and step back out again once the timer is up. These timers are also great for teaching kids the importance of water and energy saving both for ecological and economical standpoints.
Shower timers are available in a huge range of shapes and sizes (especially when it comes to kid’s models!), as well as being available in digital and sand timer form too.

Hose Timers
While the garden hose is generally used less in winter, that’s not to say they aren’t still a big waster of water. It’s far too easy to get carried away while watering the garden, washing the car or hooking up sprinklers with your garden hose, but with one of these handy hose timers, you can pre-set an amount of minutes before the hose cuts off, giving you just enough time to do your tasks without over-using water.
The timer featured above can be purchased from Screwfix who stock a nice range of eco friendly timers.
ECO Kettles
