Energy Saving Tips for the Bathroom

Energy saving has now become a key aspect of our lives. One of the hardest places to save energy is the bathroom, as everyone loves to wake up to a warm shower, come home to a warm bath and jump out of either of these into a warm temperature. But how can you save energy in your bathroom? Here are a few quick tips on how to do so.

Don’t go with the flow

Installing a few flow reducing devices such as tap aerators and low-flow shower heads can reduce water consumption by around 50-70%. When using a tap aerator will not only reduce the amount of water coming out of the tap, but the splashes will be reduced whilst a consistent water pressure is maintained. If an aerator is the option for you they are available in many sizes and they are very inexpensive to install, which give you even less of an excuse not to use it. You can also save water by replacing your current shower head with a low-flow one, which is a quick and easy step to saving water.

Simple Choices

Using the shower rather than the bath can help to cut your water bills as well as your carbon emission, as it requires more energy to heat the hot water required for a bath. Having a shower uses around 20% of the hot water needed for a bath, which is ideal for reducing your energy usage.

Switch your lighting to LED

Changing your bathroom spotlights to LED lighting provides a more efficient way to illuminate your bathroom space whilst reducing your energy usage by up to 80%. This will not only help the environment, it will also benefit you by cutting your electricity bills. If you’d like to add a little style to your bathroom, LED lights are also a perfect option for you as they are available in a choice of different colours.

Maintenance

A leaking tap may seem like the last thing on your list to change when it comes to energy saving, but let’s take into account that a hot water tap which constantly leaks can waste enough water to fill half a bath in just one week. Make sure you turn off your taps fully and if they do start to leak fix them straight away. If your tap is leaking it’s probably a sign that the washer needs replacing, which can be easily done!

Not only will these tips help the environment with less carbon emissions, they will also save you money on your bills. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many jobs; try doing each one of these throughout a two year time span.
