Case study : Lustrous look for spa-inspired Bangor bathroom

Whether it’s getting ready in the morning or winding down after a long day, our bathrooms are places where we go to get refreshed – and to relax and unwind. It therefore makes sense to create a space we like to spend time in – which is exactly what Naomi and Liam have achieved with their family bathroom in Bangor.

With the look of something from a luxury spa or boutique hotel, their recently renovated space has definite wow factor, while also retaining a homely vibe. The striking colour palette of gold and white, along with an array of statement furniture from Bathshack, makes this a dream bathroom space.

We subsequently spoke with Naomi to find out more about how she and Liam created this practical, stylish space ...

The bathroom in Naomi and Liam's home has a rich gold and white theme and includes a statement bath and shower.

Going for gold with rich accent tones

“I think I’ve always wanted my home décor to be white and gold, with lots of neutral colours,” said Naomi. “I really like Pinterest for design ideas, so when we were planning the bathroom, I put together an inspiration board. We also thought about having black with the gold at one point, but then went with the white. Everything that Bathshack had that was gold, I thought was perfect.”

"We wanted the luxury look of a spa, but also to feel that this is still a home bathroom and somewhere you can be comfortable in - that's lived-in.

Beginning with the bathroom tiles – large-format white tiles with a gold marble-effect design – Naomi said the inspiration for these actually came from a hotel they had stayed in in Glasgow. The floor tiles are subsequently large stone-coloured tiles in a complementary neutral tone.

I just knew these were the tiles we needed for our bathroom,” said Naomi. “When we were looking at what products to get, we were in-between deciding whether to go for black accessories or gold.

“When we were researching, we found that even if we could get a gold showerhead somewhere, we couldn’t get the matching waste – but Bathshack was able to do it all, which was great. They had all the products we wanted in the gold – and at really good-value prices – so all of our bathroom products are from Bathshack.”

Statement family bathtub and walk-in shower

The bathroom features a rainfall shower in brushed brass.

With smooth, sleek curves and a double-ended design which allows for bathing at both ends, the Viktor Benson Onyx Freestanding Double-ended Bath creates a stunning centrepiece in the bathroom. Standing flush to the floor, it has a contemporary design and a white gloss finish which complements the surrounding bathroom-ware. Paired with Bathshack’s Eliseo Ricci Vesu Floorstanding Bath-shower Mixer in Brushed Brass, it adds a spa-like vibe to the space, the mixer matching in with the bath’s brushed brass waste and overflow cover to complete the luxury look.

Featuring Eco Click Technology for more efficient waterflow and a reduction in wastage, the bath-shower mixer also comes with a handy extendable handset which can be used for rinsing out the bath or for washing hair.

“Everyone who comes in says the bath is gorgeous,” said Naomi. “I think a freestanding bath is always going to be more of a statement piece in any bathroom. We also have two young daughters and can actually set both of them in the bath comfortably together, which is a big selling point for us!”

To the left of the bath, meanwhile, is the second statement piece in the room – the walk-in shower. This has a white shower tray – the Elements Rectangle Slimline Shower Tray – to match in with the bath, basin and toilet, complete with central brushed brass waste and the Eliseo Ricci Exclusiv Round Handle, Head and Handset Riser Shower Kit in Brushed Brass.

The shower kit has a luxurious rainfall-style showerhead which delivers a fully immersive experience and is “amazing,” said Naomi.

She added: “The shower and bath are both statement pieces. We love the rainfall effect – and the pressure that comes from it is great. Some of our friends had said they don’t always get good pressure from their rainfall showers, but ours has such a big showerhead and so much water comes out of it. It’s amazing.”

Floating vanity unit with bespoke countertop

Opposite the bath, the couple have their vanity area, with the Josef Martin Vario Wall-mounted Vanity Unit with Prism Front from Bathshack. This is customised to suit the bathroom décor, with a bespoke white countertop added to the unit, in keeping with the white aesthetic of the space. The prism front adds visual interest and texture to the unit, while the deep design of the drawer offers plenty of room for storing all those bathroom essentials.

“The wall-mounted vanity is the only thing I let my partner, Liam, pick!” said Naomi. “He liked it because of the storage. We put all our shampoo bottles and the girls’ toys in there, so it’s all within easy reach but out of sight.”

Designed for use with a countertop basin, the vanity is paired with Bathshack’s Ravak Uni R Slim Countertop Basin, which has a modern square shape with organic, curved corners and a white gloss finish. This, combined with the deep bowl, gives it that luxury look – perfect for fitting in with the couple’s bathroom design brief.

The Viktor Benson Onyx Freestanding Bath is a focal point within the bathroom.

Bathshack's Eliseo Ricci Vesu Tall Basin Mixer in Brushed Brass subsequently stands over the basin, with a handy lever-style handle and again, with Eco Click Technology for conserving water.

To the right of the vanity area, is the toilet, which has that same gloss white finish as the other bathroom-ware and is paired with a brushed brass toilet roll holder.

“Our bathroom flows with the décor in the rest of the house, which is also decorated in neutrals, gold and white,” said Naomi. “We wanted our home to have nice rich vibes and a timeless look.

“The whole process of getting the products from Bathshack was very straightforward. We got the bespoke counter for the sink, which obviously took a bit longer, but everything else was really quick. We wanted a bathroom with a luxury, but lived-in look – and I think we’ve definitely achieved that.”
