Q&A with Bathe Botanicals founder, Christine McCaughey

What's the story behind Bathe Botanicals?

“There were three prongs to launching Bathe Botanicals. Firstly, I was off work and looking for a hobby. The second was that it was around the time of the pandemic and I was looking for things to do. I saw a video on YouTube about how to make soap and decided to try it. Thirdly, it was about wanting to be more sustainable at home, as my background is in waste management, recycling and sustainability, as well as beauty.

“It’s not something I ever set out to do but it sort of fell into my lap. I watched a YouTube video on soap-making, had a go and it snowballed from there. I was rubbish at science at school and now I think it’s funny that I’m doing chemistry every day. I’m also about to start a STEM degree.”

What's your brand ethos?

“I wanted to create a brand that was sustainable and good for the environment, so that’s at the core of Bathe Botanicals. I think that with COVID hitting at the same time, my skin was ravaged by hand sanitisers and the science showed that soap was more effective than them, if you washed your hands properly. I wanted to use more luxurious products, so it was all about finding natural alternatives. The difference was unbelievable when I used my own soap.

“My plastic consumption has also just gone down so much, since starting the business, which is amazing. I was having to shower every day at one stage, because of my job in waste management and I’d gathered so many plastic bottles of shower wash and shampoo. I was keen to develop a brand which could eliminate plastic.”

Bathe Botanicals founder, Christine Mccaughey with Bathshack's Marketing and e-Commerce Manager, Lorraine Kelly.

What products do you supply?

"In a nutshell: Artisan soap, bath and body products."

Can you describe the process behind the Bathe Botanicals range, in terms of creating new products?

“I’ll begin with an idea in my head of something I might like to try. I write that down, noting the key ingredients I would like to try in it and then build it out from there. I also look online to see what would go well with those ingredients and do research, like looking up the benefits of the ingredients. It can be quite a lengthy process.

“For example, I’m formulating a new deodorant at the minute, as I was asked to create a push-up stick. Sometimes, I also buy similar products and test them all, writing down what I like and don’t like about them. As my knowledge of products and ingredients has grown it’s become an easier process from that perspective.

“I then do test batches and once I’m happy with the final product it then has to be cosmetically assessed and I need to see if it can be produced easily. For example, I used to pour 10 loaves of soap at a time and now it’s 50. It’s all about the systems put in place now to make the process more efficient.”

What's your current favourite Bathe Botanicals product - and why?

“I have two top favourites – my natural deodorant and the seaweed shampoo bar. The deodorant is great because it doesn’t leave you wet under the arms. Mine is sodium bicarbonate-free so you shouldn’t have any itches or rashes. It’s got coconut oil, shea butter and mango butter so it’s really soothing. You feel lovely and dry and comfortable – you want to show off your armpits!

“With the shampoo bar, I’ve had every colour in my hair and am very tough on it, so I love this shampoo because, according to my hairdresser, my hair has never looked better since using it. I went from washing my hair every day, which stripped out all the natural oils, to now being able to get away with washing it just once a week. The shampoo has a lovely creamy lather – and smells amazing. My shampoo bars are also gentle enough to use all over the body as well. It’s a really cleansing bar.”

The Bathe Botanicals shampoo bars are very popular with customers and are included in the prize hamper.

What are your customer's favourite products, currently?

“There are three products I can think of right away that sell really well – the shampoo bar, deodorant and soap. The seaweed shampoo bar is relatively new, but all our shampoo bars are big sellers – and the natural deodorant is also very popular, along with the soap, which is our core product and on a constant production line.”

How did the collaboration with Bathshack come about?

“The whole collaboration came about because Bathshack got in touch about working together for the giveaway and our visions both very much aligned. We also love supporting local. We’ve worked with other NI companies before and I buy local ingredients and employ local people. ‘Local’ is at the heart of my business and Bathshack is also a local business, so it made sense to work together.”

What's next for Bathe Botanicals?

“Our plans are to keep expanding throughout Ireland and to source more stockists in the south. We’re excited to be a growing business, which is great, especially in the current economy.”
