Apartment Bathroom design: How to make the most of a small bathroom

One of the first rooms that we look at when considering a new home is the bathroom. Next to the kitchen, the bathroom is the one room that usually swings opinion in either direction of 'to choose this place as a new home or not'. The thing is, what if it is a rather small bathroom but everything else about the place is just right? Or maybe you are having an ensuite built or renovated, how do you make the most of the available space?

How can I make my small bathroom luxurious?

There are lots of options to look at when it comes to making a small bathroom not just functional but feel luxurious too. After all, you are going to spend a not-insignificant amount of time in this room so you want to be comfortable in it and a part of that is making it look great too. For instance, you will want to think about -

  • Tiles or wall panels?
  • Bath, shower or a combination?
  • Lighting options
  • Toilet and basin suite options

All of these, and more besides, are going to have an impact on the available space in your bathroom. The bath or shower option that you choose is perhaps going to have the largest impact. Showers that include a ‘bath-deep’ shower tray are perfect for small ensuite bathrooms and apartments. There is a seat with the one linked, to make it more comfortable, and it is deep enough to bath children in too. For bath/shower combinations for smaller bathrooms, it really doesn’t get much better than this.

Of course, showers are not the only way to go – even brilliant ones like the one above. There are plenty of space-saving bathtubs available too that can make your bathroom comfortable without you having to sacrifice a lot of space. There are the slightly more compact options, as well as corner tubs – either option is worth considering.

The right toilet and basin suite will also make the world of difference, and you will be able to fee up space by selecting the right one -while also having your bathroom look chic and elegant.

Making the most of the space available

Apart from the obvious amenities such as a toilet, bath or shower, washbasin etc. there are other things that every functional bathroom is going to need – regardless of how compact that bathroom may happen to be. For instance, where are you going to put all of your toiletries, towels, cleaners etc. they have to go somewhere, right?

Bathroom furniture is very often overlooked until the moment that it is actually needed, don’t make that mistake yourself. Especially with a smaller bathroom, it is very important to have a clear idea of what you are going to need and where it is going to go. Our free to use bathroom planner could well turn out to be something of a headache, sanity and finances saver.

The bathroom furniture that you choose is going to help you with a little more than just potential storage issues. There are a lot of amazing designs on offer and in lots of different styles. No matter the style you intend for your bathroom, there will be something in our collections that is going to match perfectly.

Less is more. Seriously

Everybody has their own personal style and most of us like to express this around the home, the living room and bedroom being the usual spots. There are others however that take this to the bathroom too. While there is not necessarily anything wrong with this, when you are trying to conserve space it may not be a good idea to overdo it.

With a small bathroom, having things clutter up countertops and shelves is going to make your bathroom space feel even smaller. Of course, a mirror has the opposite effect but you should not rely on that to open your bathroom again if you have just filled every available space with knick-knacks and ornaments.

Sure, that swan may well have looked amazing in the shop or even the dining room table (no judgement here) but in your bathroom? Don't make a small space look even smaller, stick to the essentials – maybe a suitable, small house plant if it complements the bathroom style.

In short, there is still a lot that can be done with a small bathroom and a little careful planning. Just don’t overdo it with the accessories.
