Top 5 Golden rules of bathroom Design

For most homes, the bathroom is the smallest room, but this does not mean that it cannot be stylish, chic and uniquely yours. Indeed, the bathroom is the most neglected room in the home when it comes to design and yet it is one of the most important rooms when it comes to relaxation. If it is a given that it is one of the most important rooms in the home, why is bathroom design always an afterthought, if even that?

For most homes, the bathroom is the smallest room, but this does not mean that it cannot be stylish, chic and uniquely yours. Indeed, the bathroom is the most neglected room in the home when it comes to design and yet it is one of the most important rooms when it comes to relaxation. If it is a given that it is one of the most important rooms in the home, why is bathroom design always an afterthought, if even that?

Designing your dream bathroom does not have to be a total pain, because it can be a lot of fun to let your creativity out. There are a few rules that should be adhered to before you unleash your inner bathroom planner. are you ready?

1 Plan your layout using a bathroom planner

If you are designing a bathroom from the ground up, you want to plan things out first before you fit so much as a single tap. You can do this on paper of course, but by far the best way to start planning a bathroom layout is by using a bathroom planner. This is software that makes bathroom planning a breeze. With this software, you can:

  • Choose a room shape or map out your own
  • Add windows and doors to better visualise the design
  • Insert furniture such as storage cupboards
  • Add in showers, baths, toilet etc.

Bathshack has a free bathroom planner and you can even submit this plan to one of our bathroom experts for review and suggestions. Try it out, it’s really easy to use and very useful.

2 Always consider your space

With the help of the bathroom planner, you will be aware of how much space is available and how much you will lose due to furniture and Amenities. No doubt you will want to the bathroom to be as spacious as possible without compromising on style. There are several options available that can help save space such as:

  • Wall-mounted toilets
  • Freestanding baths
  • Corner showers
  • Choose a large shower over a small bath

All of these options are going to free up space in your overall bathroom design, do not be afraid to let your creativity and go nuts at the design phase – a mouse click is all it takes to take something back.

3 Choose the right colours for your bathroom design

The majority of bathrooms opt for the same set of colours or hues…

  • White
  • Monochrome
  • Neutral tones

Combination tiles of grey and white bring a contemporary, masculine, and monochrome feel and feel to the room. Making use of dark patterned bathroom tiles will give a more boutique feel. This may seem like a harsher design choice, but you can soften that look with a freestanding bath which will help provide a touch of chic.

If a splash of actual colour does it for you, go for it; there are no real rules when it comes to personal taste.

4 Decide where is your lighting is going

Due to their nature, bathrooms need two types of lighting – task and ambient. Many people use candles where there are no other ambient lighting options, and that is fine. If you are designing a bathroom from scratch though then you may want to consider all three lighting options, which includes the two mentioned plus ‘accent’ lighting.

Task lights are the ones that need to be placed either side of a mirror to avoid overhead shadow – this helps with shaving, makeup and hairstyling. Ambient is great for those moments for when you want to soak in the bath and relax, these are even better with a dimmer installed.

Accent lights go at the base of walls, or perhaps behind a freestanding bath if you are installing one or already have one. These have a stunning visual effect and bring the room to life.

5 Do not forget to accessorise

When it comes to bathroom design many people forget the small things and instead focus on the large ticket items. It takes more than toilets, showers, baths, lights and storage space to make a bathroom cosy. Give thought to…

  • Candles
  • Deep bathmats
  • Fluffy towels in soft or bright colours, depending on your tastes
  • Soap dispensers
  • A decent mirror

Some of these things are not immediately obvious but they all contribute toward making a space one worthy of you relaxing in.

In summary

Becoming your own bathroom planner can be a rewarding experience, especially if you are designing the bathroom from scratch and a clean slate. Give our bathroom planner a whirl and see how it easy it is to design your dream bathroom.
